Girl washing

I have always loved this photograph.  Intimate without being vulgar.  Somehow rustic without being sentimental.  I wonder who she was, what happened in her life after the photo.  But then I wonder about all the nameless people in old photographs.  And what lay outside that window, what lost world?

  1. It makes me wonder who is taking this photograph, and if she is at all aware that the window is wide open, revealing her nakedness.

  2. You are right, Notoriously. In all art/photography there are three characters: the subject, the artist and the viewer. Of all three, it is the motivation of the subject, the one that is visible, that is the simplest to understand.
